So, I've been thinking that I can make Stink Bug a persuasive game by giving it a sustainability message.
I'm thinking - what happens when the bug finishes eating all of the oranges on a tree? Were does it go after that? What's the limit and end point of the game?
So i decided that it would be a game in an orchard. Primarily oranges, but maybe some lime trees (more fruit but smaller fruit, therefore more flying around to get less energy/health). Maye Lemon trees also (do they look like lime trees, but worth less because there's less sugar in them? Detail for later).
Anyway - what's the point of the game? To live as long as possible. If a player goes crazy and drains all of the trees quickly, they won't have time to regrow their oranges and the bug will die, even though they get really good at draining the oranges and evading the farmer's bug spray and the birds eating them.
The message is - don't go crazy and drain all of your natural resources - conserve them and you will live longer. Leave some oranges on the trees and there will be something for you to go back to? Drain all oranges off the tree and the tree dies, so can't ever bear fruit again? If they were all drained, a player might think - woo hoo! I win! Until they're health drains and they die - then getting the sustainability message. Reflective of planet (orchard) - we live in a ertain area (planet), need to consume the resources, but if we go crazy and drain them all we'll die. But we can't not use any or we die as well. Message about balance and awareness.
So it turns out a balance between flying around, balancing energy supplies and avoiding being killed. You need to eat to stay alive.
When the bug dies, the farmer says 'boy that bug stinks!'
Increasing challenge as time passes, more poison, more birds, competing stink bugs? All fine until the other bugs notice your nice patch and go crazy - try to kill other bugs?
Farmers poison - does it just kill a bit, drain some health but not kill? But birds kill outright?
That's all for now
